Revitalizing Literacy Through Sports

31 corporate sponsors and 250 individuals raised more than $150,000 by attending Coaching for Literacy’s annual event: “Revitalizing Literacy Through Sports.” Over $100,000 has been allocated to create a direct literacy impact for hundreds of children in Memphis and throughout America.

Coaching for Literacy makes a huge impact at STREETS by connecting donors to the literacy projects we execute for our children,” said Reggie Davis, Executive Director of STREETS. “We are grateful for their invaluable work."

The funds raised on April 4th sent 12 out of 94 registered campers to Memphis Teacher Residency’s MTR Camp this summer and also made it possible for 20 students to attend STREETS’ after-school literacy program: Street Smarts.

Guests gathered at the Halloran Centre to hear a compelling education panel featuring Elliot Perry and Andre Turner. University of Memphis President, Dr. David Rudd, moderated this particular portion of the program.

Afterward the conversation with Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze and Wayne Drash of CNN captivated the audience. “When I look at the totality of the issue of literacy, it almost seems overwhelming,” said Coach Freeze. “But if enough of us collectively make a difference, in one area with one child at a time, then we really can make a difference.”

"We are grateful for the partnership of Coaching for Literacy,” said Candace Obadina, MTR Camp Director. “Their support allows us to reduce summer learning regression for young Memphis readers, an invaluable long-term investment in our community."

The entirety of the evening reinforced Coaching for Literacy’s core message: our society must care about the issue of illiteracy. If you want to be a part of the movement creating a brighter future, visit our website and take part in our 3-Step Impact Plan: Learn, Join, Donate.
